Japan requires an auto inspection every 2 years, costing the owner about US $2,000 and resulting in it being rare for old cars to be seen on the street. Rather than keep an old car, eventually it ends up cheaper to buy a new car. Good for the auto industry. Also, to register a car, you have to have proof that you have an off-street location to park it. Thus the two level garage you see in one photo.

In case you can't read it, below "Be Cool" on the pickup truck in the fourth picture, are the words "IT'S KIND OF FUN TO DO THE IMPOSSIBLE".
